Mount Barker Transport Master Plan (2008-2009)

Client

The District Council of Mount Barker

Project Description

The District Council of Mount Barker is one of the fastest growing councils in Australia. With significant population growth, it is critical that we carefully plan for our future to achieve a positive, safe and sustainable future, whilst ensuring the lifestyle and business advantages of the District continue.

Transport and traffic management is an essential element of planning for growth and the development of the District. The Transport Master Plan informs the future direction for building successful, sustainable and efficient transport networks for the District. Council is preparing for the future by planning for infrastructure projects and implementing a series of actions and strategies for the District.

InfraPlan Involvement

InfraPlan was commissioned by the District Council of Mount Barker to undertake the Transport Master Plan in June 2008. The development of the Plan required extensive consultation with both community and State Government to ensure this is a robust Plan that is reflective of the needs of community needs. This consultation was imperative in understanding the key drivers and policy context for the development of the Plan.

The Plan itself was structured with actions and strategies contained within five sections and deals with the transport investment and planning necessary in a time of population growth, and offers integrated and efficient transport solutions that meet future and current needs. The sections of the Plan include:

  • Future Growth
  • Public Transport
  • Walking and Cycling
  • Road Safety
  • Travel Demand Management

The Transport Master Plan also included detailed short to medium Works Programs which details the orderly development of transport infrastructure and transport investigations throughout the District. The Transport Master Plan has proved instrumental in attracting infrastructure funding and illustrating the transport needs of the District and providing policy-makers with the information they require to make informed decisions.
